this website will documentate the build and use of my Ford Falcon 1965 that will be prepared for a FIA HTP to compete at least in next years Rallye Monte Carlo Historique...I also plan to use the race car for some hill climbs and if possible for Endurance races on tracks.

Competition Falcons


The 1964 competition Falcons were very special cars. Weight was saved by extensive use of glass fibre body panels instead of steel, and the Holman & Moody-prepared Cobra V8s engines gave a great deal more power and torque than the standard cars. Estimates of actual power figures for the Monte Carlo cars vary but it was probably in the region of 300bhp.
 




Special close-ratio gearboxes were used, driving the rear wheels through Galaxie back axles with limited slip differentials installed. Suspension and brakes were also totally reworked for the job in mind. For some years after the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally, the fate of the original rally and spare 'recce' Falcons remained a mystery. The rumour was that they had been cut up and sunk in the North Sea under the eyes of a British Customs & Excise official. This popular myth held that destroying them was cheaper than returning them to the USA or retaining them in the UK as, in both cases, heavy customs duty would have been payable. The truth was that the few that had not been wrecked in the normal course of events were quietly stored away. Years later some of them, and several copies of them, reappeared to become formidable competitors in Historic racing.

Back in 1964, after the sensational Monte cars, little was heard of the Falcon outside the USA. Ford was marketing the Mustang as a performance road car and Le Mans was the focus of Ford of America's European competition programme.

 

 

Engine: '289', overhead-valve V8 with two- or four-valve heads; 4,736cc; bore/stroke, 102mm x 73mm; four-choke Ford carburettor.
Power : 4-valve road version: 225bhp at 4,800rpm.
Torque: 4-valve road version: 305lb ft at 3,200rpm.
Transmission: Manual or automatic gearbox with rear-wheel drive from front-mounted engine.
Dimensions: Small in the USA, vast in Europe!
Body: Steel monocoque; two-door sports compact as hardtop or convertible.
Suspension: Front: strut-type, coil springs Rear: live axle with semi-elliptic springs.
Brakes: Discs front, drums rear.
Top speed: No performance figures were recorded for the Monte cars. Standard road models were probably similar to contemporary Ford Mustangs in performance. ie Top speed about 115mph, 0-60mph around 8sec and 12-15mpg as typical fuel consumption

More bad news !!

After we dissassembled the engine to fit new pistons, we found that the block itself was damaged as well....not really a quality job from the guy who built the engine in my opinion. Claude Alain from Briod Motors found a 1965 Mustang 289 block, now we build a new engine from both as mine had good...

bad news..

when the chief mechanic came back from adjusting perfectly the front end geometry, all of a sudden headgasket blown. then dissassembly and the really bad news were that piston numero uno was fitted already severly damaged. means total overhaul of the engine with 8 new pistons...

some progress!

Finally the last changes to be okay for FIA have been made; ignition is changed to points, from electronic. the cage has to be reinforced with nuts and bolts. wiring loom is now simplified.

when i opened the hood for the first time, i found out that the previous owner already had fitted en edelbrock manifold and big holley carb. not bad.

finally,  took longer than expected, but the fiberglass parts (hood, trunk, doors, front fenders, front and rear bumper) left the factory....
